Published research on Atorvastatin

5 peer-reviewed publications on Atorvastatin in oncology research, clinical work first, then laboratory studies. Each entry reports what the authors stated; follow the link for the full paper.

This page is a reading list of peer-reviewed publications, compiled for information. It is not a statement of indications, a recommendation or medical advice. Results from cell and animal studies do not translate into clinical use. Medsuvac products are supplied for their registered purposes; clinical decisions belong to a qualified physician.
  1. Clinical trial

Atorvastatin in combination with radiotherapy and temozolomide for glioblastoma: a prospective phase II study

Altwairgi AK et al., Investigational New Drugs, 2021

In a single-arm phase II study of 36 glioblastoma patients receiving atorvastatin with standard radiotherapy and temozolomide, the 6-month progression-free survival rate was 66% with a median PFS of 7.6 months; atorvastatin was not shown to improve PFS-6, and high baseline LDL was associated with worse survival.

  2. Clinical trial

    Statin-induced anti-proliferative effects via cyclin D1 and p27 in a window-of-opportunity breast cancer trial

Feldt M et al., Journal of Translational Medicine, 2015

In paired tumor samples from the same phase II window-of-opportunity trial, two weeks of high-dose atorvastatin before surgery decreased nuclear cyclin D1 intensity and increased p27 protein expression, while ER, PR and HER2 expression did not change significantly.

  3. Clinical trial

Targeting HMG-CoA reductase with statins in a window-of-opportunity breast cancer trial

Bjarnadottir O et al., Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, 2013

In 50 patients with primary invasive breast cancer given high-dose atorvastatin for two weeks before surgery, HMGCR expression was up-regulated in 68% of evaluable paired tumor samples; Ki67 did not decrease significantly in the whole group but decreased by 24% in tumors expressing HMGCR before treatment.

  4. Observational

Atorvastatin and fluvastatin are associated with dose-dependent reductions in cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, among patients with hepatitis C virus: Results from ERCHIVES

Simon TG et al., Hepatology, 2016

In a cohort of 9,135 HCV-infected veterans, statin use was associated with a 44% reduction in incident cirrhosis and a 49% reduction in incident hepatocellular carcinoma in a dose-dependent manner, with atorvastatin and fluvastatin showing the largest effects among statins.

  5. Observational

Combination Therapy of Metformin and Statin May Decrease Hepatocellular Carcinoma Among Diabetic Patients in Asia

Chen HH et al., Medicine (Baltimore), 2015

In a Taiwanese cohort of newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes patients, statin use was associated with lower odds of hepatocellular carcinoma (OR 0.37), with atorvastatin specifically at OR 0.31 and metformin plus atorvastatin at OR 0.30.
