Published research on Celecoxib

5 peer-reviewed publications on Celecoxib in oncology research, clinical work first, then laboratory studies. Each entry reports what the authors stated; follow the link for the full paper.

This page is a reading list of peer-reviewed publications, compiled for information. It is not a statement of indications, a recommendation or medical advice. Results from cell and animal studies do not translate into clinical use. Medsuvac products are supplied for their registered purposes; clinical decisions belong to a qualified physician.
  1. Clinical trial

Effect of Celecoxib vs Placebo Added to Standard Adjuvant Therapy on Disease-Free Survival Among Patients With Stage III Colon Cancer: The CALGB/SWOG 80702 (Alliance) Randomized Clinical Trial

Meyerhardt JA et al., JAMA, 2021

In 2524 patients with stage III colon cancer, three years of celecoxib added to adjuvant FOLFOX did not significantly improve disease-free survival compared with placebo (3-year disease-free survival 76.3% vs 73.4%, hazard ratio 0.89, P = .12).

  2. Clinical trial

Phase III Randomized, Placebo-Controlled, Double-Blind Trial of Celecoxib in Addition to Standard Chemotherapy for Advanced Non-Small-Cell Lung Cancer With Cyclooxygenase-2 Overexpression: CALGB 30801 (Alliance)

Edelman MJ et al., Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2017

In 312 patients with COX-2-expressing advanced non-small cell lung cancer, the trial was halted for futility and adding celecoxib to chemotherapy showed no significant difference in progression-free survival.

  3. Clinical trial

Eicosanoid modulation in advanced lung cancer: cyclooxygenase-2 expression is a positive predictive factor for celecoxib + chemotherapy (Cancer and Leukemia Group B Trial 30203)

Edelman MJ et al., Journal of Clinical Oncology, 2008

In a randomized phase II trial of 134 patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer, adding celecoxib and/or zileuton to chemotherapy produced no overall survival difference between arms, while a prospectively defined subset analysis suggested better survival with celecoxib in patients with moderate to high COX-2 expression.

  4. Clinical trial

Celecoxib for the prevention of sporadic colorectal adenomas

Bertagnolli MM et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 2006

In 2035 patients with previously removed adenomas, celecoxib reduced the three-year cumulative incidence of new adenomas (43.2% and 37.5% at the two doses vs 60.7% with placebo) but was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular events, leading the authors to conclude it could not be routinely recommended for this indication.

  5. Clinical trial

The effect of celecoxib, a cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor, in familial adenomatous polyposis

Steinbach G et al., New England Journal of Medicine, 2000

In a double-blind placebo-controlled study of 77 patients with familial adenomatous polyposis, six months of celecoxib at the higher of two doses reduced the mean number of colorectal polyps by 28.0% and polyp burden by 30.7% compared with 4.5% and 4.9% in the placebo group.
