Published research on Niclosamide

4 peer-reviewed publications on Niclosamide in oncology research, clinical work first, then laboratory studies. Each entry reports what the authors stated; follow the link for the full paper.

This page is a reading list of peer-reviewed publications, compiled for information. It is not a statement of indications, a recommendation or medical advice. Results from cell and animal studies do not translate into clinical use. Medsuvac products are supplied for their registered purposes; clinical decisions belong to a qualified physician.
  1. Clinical trial

Phase Ib trial of reformulated niclosamide with abiraterone/prednisone in men with castration-resistant prostate cancer

Parikh M et al., Scientific Reports, 2021

In nine men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, a reformulated oral niclosamide combined with abiraterone and prednisone produced no dose-limiting toxicities, achieved plasma levels above the preclinical threshold, and five of eight evaluable patients had a PSA response.

  2. Clinical trial

A phase I study of niclosamide in combination with enzalutamide in men with castration-resistant prostate cancer

Schweizer MT et al., PLoS One, 2018

Oral niclosamide could not be escalated beyond the highest tested dose because of dose-limiting gastrointestinal toxicity, plasma concentrations were not consistently above the preclinical therapeutic threshold, no PSA declines were observed, and the study was closed for futility.

  3. In vivo

Antihelminth compound niclosamide downregulates Wnt signaling and elicits antitumor responses in tumors with activating APC mutations

Osada T et al., Cancer Research, 2011

Niclosamide inhibited Wnt/beta-catenin signalling and proliferation in human colorectal cancer cell lines and patient-derived cells regardless of APC mutation status, and orally administered niclosamide was well tolerated and led to tumour control in colorectal cancer xenografts.

  4. In vivo

Novel effect of antihelminthic Niclosamide on S100A4-mediated metastatic progression in colon cancer

Sack U et al., Journal of the National Cancer Institute, 2011

Niclosamide reduced S100A4 expression, migration, invasion and colony formation in colon cancer cells in vitro and reduced liver metastasis formation and increased overall survival in a xenograft mouse model of colon cancer.
